It's finally happened for the first time — the kind of news that fans have been waiting for has finally dropped. Rockstar Games has given its first official confirmation that the next Grand Theft Auto game is in development.

Revealed as part of a 'community update' on the Rockstar Newswire that mostly concerned itself with details on upcoming GTA Online content and features to be released alongside Expanded and Enhanced, now confirmed to release on the 15th of March in spite of rumors about another delay, details on Grand Theft Auto 6, other than its official existence, are scarce.

Rockstar hasn't even explicitly named it "GTA 6", but everyone is going to be calling it that for the sake of ease until an official name is revealed, and it turns out to be something different — which is unlikely. The official press release simply stated that development on "the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway."

That's the full extent of what we've learned from the post, and we wouldn't hold our breath for anything new too soon — the message continues to say that the developers are excited to share more "as soon as they are ready" and to stay tuned to the Newswire for more official details.

The promise of sharing information or releasing games "soon™" has become something of a meme in the video game community, with more often than not things promised to be coming "soon" taking quite a long while. Since Rockstar didn't promise more info soon, but as soon as they are ready, it's pretty clear that we're in for quite the wait.

With GTA 5 E&E poised to hit the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on March 15, the media will have its fill with GTA related content even without news of the hotly anticipated sequel, and Rockstar likely won't be stealing the limelight from its own new product by revealing more about GTA 6.

In any case, finally getting an official confirmation is already a major step in the right direction, and a milestone in the pre-release history of GTA 6.
