Modder Uses Exploit to Achieve Grand Theft Auto Online Crossplay Between PS4 and PC
The modder used a custom LSO private server and a developer copy of Grand Theft Auto 5 to achieve what was once thought as impossible.
What if we told you that there's a way to play GTA Online with your friends on PlayStation 4 even if you're playing on a PC and vice versa?
While GTA Online has never supported crossplatform play and likely never will, a modder has done what Rockstar Games has never done before. Their secret? A jailbroken PlayStation 4, a developer copy of Grand Theft Auto 5, and a custom private server.
As first revealed by @GTASixInfo on X, Los Santos Online's Discord server owner Jorby showed GTA Online crossplay in action as one player on the jailbroken PS4 and another on PC flew around Los Santos together on a helicopter using the aforementioned loophole.
However, if it isn't already obvious by now, this isn't something that the average player can just do. Not everyone has access to a jailbroken PS4, let alone a developer copy of GTA 5. Custom private servers are an added expense as well. Los Santos Online, for example, has an access fee of $5 a month.
@GTASixInfo insinuates that Rockstar could have always implemented crossplay in GTA Online but specifically chose not to do it. Considering that GTA Online's PC playerbase traditionally dealt with more hacks and exploits compared to its console counterparts, Rockstar had and still has several legitimate reasons to keep the console and PC playerbases separate from each other.
While the exploit is indeed a neat trick, it's unlikely that Rockstar will change its approach in regards to crossplay in GTA Online at this point - nor should we start expecting the feature in whatever future form the multiplayer mode takes once Grand Theft Auto VI releases.
On that note though, the implementation of BattlEye in GTA Online in late 2024 suggests that Rockstar is, at the very least, considering the possibility of crossplay between consoles and PC in Grand Theft Auto 6 when it finally rolls out on both platforms sometime in the future.
If we're lucky, Rockstar will release GTA 6 on the PC within the next 2-3 years after it comes out later this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. Rockstar is currently hard at work on the next GTA 6 game, which, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, will be worth the wait.
